We just want to pass along some info about Amendment 16 that will impose a closed season for shallow-water grouper fishing from January 1 through April. This embargo on recreational and commercial fishing for grouper covers 11 species in total: gag, black, red, scamp, rock hind, coney, misty, graysby, yellowfin, yellowmouth and tiger grouper.
These restrictions are definitely going to impact the sport of fishing in Florida although it seems that it was overfishing of certain species that led to these changes.
Captain Ralph Delphi of Key West made the statement that “The Keys differ so greatly from Central Florida, and from the Carolinas, to make rules that apply to all regions equally is ludicrous. It’s going to be a great disaster economically for all Florida. Even today, I don’t really think that most recreational anglers are even aware of these closures.”
We’ll see what happens and we’ll keep you posted. Write back and let us know what you think and if you need more information!
